„Poleg razpršene atmosfere, h kateri prispeva izvrstno lučno oblikovanje, predstavo odlikuje izvajalski razpon Maše Kagao Knez, ki sodi v vrh slovenskih plesalcev.“ (Mojca Kumerdej, Delo)

„Next to dispersed atmosphere, to which contributes the excellent lighting design, the performance is distinguished for the performing span of Maša Kagao Knez, who at this moment is one of the top Slovenian dancers.“ (Mojca Kumerdej, Delo)
„... Born Outside My Village is a completely finalized performance which makes you think, it overwhelms you, making you believe in its every move, in the entirety of its choreography which spells out biographical moments and draws an entire cultural symbolism.“ (Daliborka Podboj, Parada plesa)
The African word “kagao” means “woman born outside her village”, 1978 indicates year of her birth.
Maša Kagao Knez whose roots are Slovenian on her mother’s side and from Burkina Faso on her father’s is a dancer and choreographer, born and raised in Ljubljana. She has been actively involved in the Slovenian dance scene for almost two decades. Between 2004 and 2006 she attended the Georges Momboye school for traditional and modern African dance in Paris. “I am neither black/African nor am I modern,” says Maša, and continues: “When I’m in Slovenia I’m not a modern dance performer and in Africa I’m not an African dance performer. I’m an outsider wherever I go.”
Her solo performance is based on the experience of being on the outside and not belonging anywhere, combined with the principles of dual identity. Maša involved two choreographers from different dance backgrounds in her project, Rosana Hribar and Filibert Tologo, to develop the physical dance material of one a single body – of the dancer, Maša Kagao Knez – from two different perspectives.
Whilst the first part of this “research of movement” was entitled Born Outside Her Village (choreography by Rosana Hribar), the second part, created a good year later is called 1978 (choreography by Filibert Tologo). The two parts form despite their duality (and precisely because of it) and because of their two different performative languages an entity intrinsic to humans and the dual principles of human action (good, bad), location (place, time) and notion (male, female).
